How much does it cost to move from NYC to Washington DC? (2026)

Full-service movers: $2,500-$8,000 for the 225-mile NYC-to-DC corridor: $2,500-$4,000 for a studio or 1-bedroom, $4,000-$6,000 for a 2-3 bedroom, and $6,000-$8,000 for 4+ bedrooms. A DIY one-way truck is $400-$900 including fuel and tolls; moving containers run $1,500-$3,000. The drive is 4-4.5 hours without traffic, and dedicated-truck moves deliver in 1-3 business days. The reverse DC-to-NYC move uses the same ranges.

Figures reflect typical 2026 licensed-mover pricing on this corridor, consistent with our NYC-to-Boston route (similar distance). Summer moves (May-September) book 6-8 weeks out; October is the cheapest NYC origin month in movd data (median flat-rate local move $495).

NYC to DC Moving Costs by Service Type

Distance is not the cost driver on this route; it is labor at two difficult curbs. A Manhattan load-out with a reserved freight elevator and a Capitol Hill rowhouse unload with a DDOT-permitted curb take the same crew-hours whether the truck drives 225 miles or 2,500. That is why the corridor prices almost identically to NYC-to-Boston and why the cheapest wins come from timing and inventory, not haggling over mileage.

Service TypeCost Range (USD)What You Get / Watch For

Professional Full-Service

$2,500-$8,000Studio/1BR $2,500-$4,000; 2-3BR $4,000-$6,000; 4BR+ $6,000-$8,000. Loading, transport, unloading, basic liability coverage; COI and DDOT curb permit handled by experienced crews. 1-3 business days on a dedicated truck.

DIY One-Way Truck

$400-$900Truck, fuel, and tolls on the Turnpike, Delaware Memorial Bridge, and Baltimore tunnels (truck tolls are a multiple of car tolls). Doable in a day; the hard part is loading in NYC without a permit and finding curb space in DC without the Emergency No Parking signs a mover would have pulled.

Moving Container

$1,500-$3,000Drop-off, self-load, transport, optional storage. Needs a legal place to sit for days at both ends; that is a real obstacle in Manhattan and in DC rowhouse neighborhoods with Residential Parking Permit zones.

DIY vs. professional on this corridor: A 4-4.5 hour drive makes DIY tempting, and for a studio with a friend and a van it can work. Two things usually tip people back to movers: NYC parkways (FDR, Henry Hudson, Belt, Grand Central) ban trucks, so a rental must stay on truck routes you may not know; and DC curb space in Residential Parking Permit zones is nearly impossible to hold without the DDOT signs. Professionals also carry propane and other items you cannot take through the Baltimore tunnels and deliver the same day they load.

Why New Yorkers Move to DC, and the Honest Trade-offs

DC is a career move more than a lifestyle move. The pull is a specific job in government, policy, law, defense and federal contracting, international development, or the Amazon HQ2 and tech corridor in Arlington. What you get alongside it is a smaller, greener, more orderly city with a real transit system and a train back to Penn Station every hour.

Government, Law, Policy & Contracting

Federal agencies, the Hill, law firms, think tanks, NGOs, and a large contractor economy in Northern Virginia. Hiring runs on the congressional and federal calendar, which is why so many moves cluster in January and summer.

Car-Free Is Still Possible

Metro's six rail lines plus a dense bus network cover DC and the inner suburbs, and the city is flat and bikeable. It runs less often than the subway and closes overnight, but a New Yorker can live in DC, Arlington, or Bethesda without a car.

Close Enough to Commute Back

About 3 hours on Acela, 3.5 on the Northeast Regional, 4-4.5 by car, and a short shuttle flight into DCA. Plenty of people keep NYC clients, partners, or family on a weekly rhythm; it is the only major relocation where that is realistic.

DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland: Which Side of the Potomac?

The Washington region is three jurisdictions with three tax codes, three DMVs, and three parking-permit systems, all within a 20-minute Metro ride of each other. New Yorkers tend to sort themselves by an NYC analogue; the table maps the common choices.

DC Proper

Best for: Hill, agency, law, and policy workers who want to walk or bike to work and keep the NYC rhythm.

Capitol Hill and Navy Yard put you near the Capitol and the ballpark; Dupont, Logan Circle, Shaw, and U Street are the dining and nightlife core; Columbia Heights and Petworth are where the rent relief is. Expect rowhouses and English basements more than elevator buildings, DC income tax, and Residential Parking Permits by zone.

Arlington

Best for: Tech, defense, and contracting professionals, and anyone optimizing the tax bill.

Across the river but only minutes by Metro, with the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor and National Landing (Amazon HQ2) supplying the jobs and newer elevator buildings with COI and freight-elevator rules a New Yorker will recognize. Virginia's 5.75% top income-tax rate is the lowest in the region.

Alexandria

Best for: Families and couples who want a walkable historic core with slightly lower rents than Arlington.

Old Town is the brownstone-Brooklyn experience with a waterfront; Del Ray is the quieter, stroller-heavy version. Blue and Yellow Lines reach downtown DC, and the same Virginia tax rate applies.

Bethesda & Silver Spring

Best for: Families prioritizing Montgomery County public schools, and NIH, Walter Reed, or FDA employees.

Both sit on the Red Line. Bethesda is the pricier, leafier option; Silver Spring offers the most apartment for the money inside the Beltway. Maryland charges state income tax plus a county tax, so compare after-tax rent, not just rent.

Moving from DC to NYC? Same Route, Different Hard Part

Roughly as many people search for movers from DC to NYC as the other way around, and the price is the same: $2,500-$8,000 full-service, 1-3 business days. The difference is that the complicated end of the move is now the destination, and it is New York.

What the NYC end requires

  • A certificate of insurance (COI) naming your building, usually required before the truck is allowed to park
  • A reserved freight-elevator window, often weekdays only, booked 2-4 weeks ahead
  • A crew that knows NYC parkways ban trucks and that there is no curb permit to pull; the truck double-parks and works fast
  • Walk-up stairs in brownstone Brooklyn and pre-war Manhattan; measure sofas and mattresses against the stairwell

Good news on the NYC lease

  • Since June 2025 the FARE Act puts the broker fee on whoever hired the broker, usually the landlord
  • New York caps security deposits at one month of rent, so move-in cash is typically first month plus one month deposit
  • No residential parking permits exist in NYC; if you are bringing a car, budget for a garage or sell it in DC
  • Our local crews deliver into all five boroughs; a DC-origin move can be quoted the same flat-rate way

Your NYC to DC Relocation Checklist

Sequenced from two months out to the first weeks in DC. The items that bite people on this route are the DC-specific ones: the DDOT curb permit, the 60-day license and registration clock, and the Residential Parking Permit that will not issue without DC plates.

6-8 Weeks Out
  • Book movers now if you are moving May-September; 3-4 weeks is enough in the off-season
  • Request written move-out approval and a freight-elevator window from your NYC building
  • Decide DC vs. Virginia vs. Maryland with the tax and parking rules in front of you, not just the rent
  • Declutter; on a short route, volume sets the price more than mileage does
1 Month Out
  • Finalize your inventory and get binding quotes from 3-5 vetted interstate movers
  • Confirm the DC building's COI and freight-elevator rules (Navy Yard, NoMa, and Arlington towers have them)
  • Ask your mover who is pulling the DDOT Emergency No Parking signs for the DC curb
  • Arrange temporary storage if your NYC lease ends before the DC lease starts
2 Weeks to Move Day
  • Pack non-essentials and label by room; measure large pieces against rowhouse stairwells
  • Confirm COIs, elevator times, and the delivery window in writing (dedicated vs. consolidated)
  • Book your own trip: Amtrak, car, or a shuttle flight into DCA all work
  • Give away propane tanks and other items movers will not carry through the Baltimore tunnels
First 60 Days in DC
  • Convert your license and registration: DC and Maryland allow about 60 days, Virginia 60 for the license and 30 for registration
  • Apply for your Residential Parking Permit once you have local plates; it is zone-based and enforced
  • Set up utilities, internet, and renters insurance; get a SmarTrip card for Metro
  • Register to vote and update your tax withholding for DC, Virginia, or Maryland

How to Find and Vet NYC to DC Movers

The corridor is dense with carriers, which keeps prices honest but also attracts lead-reselling brokers who quote low, collect a deposit, and hand your move to whoever is free. Four checks sort the real movers from the middlemen.

Verify the USDOT Number

Look it up on the FMCSA site; a broker has an MC number but no trucks

Insist on a Binding Quote

Itemized, inventory-based, and flat; hourly rates with no cap are a red flag on an interstate move

Check Both-City Experience

Ask about NYC COIs and DC DDOT permits by name; a real corridor crew answers instantly

Pin Down the Truck

Dedicated or consolidated, same-day or 1-3 days, and who actually drives

Packing and Storage for the NYC to DC Move

A short haul means little road risk, but DC housing creates two packing problems of its own: English basements with low ceilings and tight exterior stairs, and rowhouse doorways narrower than a standard sofa. Measure first, then decide what travels.

Professional Packing

When it pays: a tight NYC elevator window, fragile items, or a same-day load-and-deliver plan.

  • Keeps the load inside your reserved freight-elevator window
  • Pack for carrying, not just driving: rowhouse stairs and basement entries are the damage points
  • Our Preferred tier includes 10 boxes and 5 packed fragile boxes; Stress-Free packs everything
  • Humidity: wrap wood and electronics for a DC summer delivery

Storage Between Leases

Common on this route: NYC leases end at month-end while DC leases often start mid-month around a job date.

  • Mover-held storage keeps everything on one contract and one delivery
  • Compare storing in NYC vs. near DC; the delivery leg is short either way
  • Climate control matters more in DC summers than in NYC
  • Check insurance and access rules before signing
